SJP 2008 Advertising – Full Page Cover Red & Black

To support my alma mater and the current Jefferson City high school newspaper staff along with getting the word out about my business to JC seniors I took over the back cover of the 24-page newspaper with this Ad:

The Red & Black staff is doing a great job this year (as they do every year) and this year’s innovative staff took the initiative to retire my design, turning the paper into a modern news magazine. The paper looks better than ever and the articles are as journalistically sound as they ever have been due in great part to the continued commitment of adviser Bill Currie. I hope all of you from the Jefferson City area have the chance to pick up a Red & Blacknow and then, these students continually do a complete and accurate job reporting the news, and they have no fear when it comes to covering the important issues.

Mid-America Speedway Nationals Comes to Lasoski Speedway

Click HERE to go directly to my ONLINE STORE!

This weekend the Mid-America Speedway Nationals brought some great go-kart racing to our own Lasoski Speedway in Warrensburg! Saturday was a beautiful day to race and photograph! The hot news from the day includes the spectacular showing from two young LADIES out of North Carolina. There was a resounding “Did you see that GIRL? She is fast!!!” from crowds of Mid-America racers who are not accustomed to seeing many ladies on the tracks. (One of these ladies is seen below sitting on the pole for the feature race in her fittingly marked “Hammer Time” kart)

Wendell Shorthose also had a great day, picking up the fast lap time of the day (and unofficially in track history) with a “blazingly” fast lap time of 10.127 second lap during his qualifying race in his Killam Racing Engines powered Icon.

And unfortunately each big race seems to need a bit of excitement that usually ends with a bit of damage, and this race was no different, as you can see below a flip out of turn two gave the crowd quite a show. The driver, being the eternal racer, kept the kart running through the flip in hope of hopping back in to finish the race.

There are about 800 images total (with only about 120 posted now) so check back soon as I will do my best to get them up as quick as possible!

Also, keep an eye out for my “effects” post where you can see the different available effects to add to your images FREE to get more than just the traditional racing images!!! These are unlike anything you have ever seen.

Lasoski Go Kart 2008 Season Opened Saturday: It was the first race for one young racer.

Lasoski Speedway opened the 2008 go-kart racing season this last Saturday with a four hour practice day. The day allowed area karters to get in a day’s practice before the racing season begins next week, but for one racer the day marked his first time on the track.

With dad cheering on trackside, this young racer took the first laps of his first season.

Images from practice can be viewed/purchased at my online store.

Also, check back soon to see new product designs here just in time for the 2008 race season.

Imaging USA

This January I had the opportunity to visit the largest Professional Photographers of America (PPA) conference in Tampa, Florida… Imaging USA. While the trip was partly about the opportunity to travel to beautiful Tampa with fellow photography students, obviously the trip’s most important value was in the opportunity it gave me to be immersed in a world completely focused on my passion with over 8,000 other passionate photographers.

At the conference, I had the opportunity to visit with hundreds of photographers, attend dozens of sessions, and spend a week where nothing mattered but photography. At Imaging, photographers from around the country share their latest trends, sales secrets and general interests. I was introduced to the work of JB and DeEtte Sallee, Yervant, Howard Schatz, Kevin Kubota and many more amazing image-makers from around the world. I also had the chance to have my work reviewed and critiqued by a handful of these professionals, and all I will say is that the general opinion was quite positive.

The whole experience confirmed the fact that photography is my passion and a successful, customer focused studio is definitely in my future. Photography is my dream and Imaging USA was my dreamland, my Disney World.

Keep your eyes open for links to photographers I met in Tampa. They shared with me, and I plan to share with you.

Jefferson City High School – Going back after 2 years!

Recently, I had the opportunity to take a trip back to Jefferson City High School to teach the journalism staff members how to best use their newly purchased photography equipment. For me it was a great honor to be asked back into the classes that taught me the most during my high school years. Bill Currie, the high school journalism adviser, is the one who invited me back and welcomed me in, allowing me to share anything and everything I could to the students about how to use their equipment. I also had the opportunity to share some insights into the college world and I took that chance to tell the students all the “I wish I knew then, what I know now” advice that I could think of.

My audience was completely receptive, and they made it a great day. I have invited all those students to visit my site and blog and to contact me if they ache to get closer to the world of photography as I did at that age. I have yet to receive any contact, but I remember seeing many speakers offer the same availability, and I never acted on the offer to communicate further, so we will see how ambitious these students are.

It was odd to go back and feel so old in a room I basically lived in only two years ago, but it felt great to be able to bring my knowledge back. I am personally very proud of the heights that the student newspaper has come to and I hope to see it push past the current standard and continue to raise the bar of success as it has over the past years. The paper couldn’t ask for a better adviser and the students (although most will not realize it until after graduation, and some may never realize it) are lucky to have the opportunity to produce such a respected publication under an adviser as knowledgeable and caring as Bill Currie.

This was an exciting adventure for me, and as such I wanted to share it will all of you.

Thanks!

Sarah Jane – Racing Photography

Wow! My venture into the world of racing photography has been a blast. I received a great responce for the racers from the Sedalia Coliseum. With over 500 visits to my online store, it seems that racers like these images as much as I do.

While my passion for photography still lies in the hand of all my wonderful wedding and portrait clients, I cannot deny the fun I have had spreading my wings at the races. Though my packed schedule will not allow me to commit to weekly race coverage, I do plan to continue taking my camera to every race I can attend and answering the call for some great race images.

For those of you that would like a look at these exciting images, for now they can be viewed through my online store and soon my favorite race images will be posted in a new gallery on my website.

I hope you all have as much fun looking at these images as I had while taking them!

Racing Photography by Sarah Jane Photography

ryan-2.jpg

My latest photographic adventure came at the Sedalia coliseum in the form of a high energy Go-Kart race. My long-time boyfriend has raced most of his life and while I casually shot him, his brother’s and his father’s races before now, this weekend I decided to take it a step further and offer my images to the many other racers there that day. I photographed the entire event and those images can now be viewed and purchased through my website (sjanephotography.com)

I love having the opportunity to do things in photography that are a little outside my “norm.” And that is exactly what I did at the races. I hope that the racers enjoy the images as I know race-day photographers are becoming rare.

Thanks everyone! I had a blast!

Sarah Jane Photography: The Beginnings

Who, What, When, Where & Why?

I am Sarah of Sarah Jane Photography. I am currently a student at the University of Central Missouri. I will graduate in May 2010 with a BS degree in Photography and a minor in Psychology. My journey in photography, however, did not begin in Warrensburg. I was given my first camera at the age of twelve, and as my mother would tell you, “the rest was history.” I immediately fell in love with the camera and the beauty I could both capture and create with it. It was not until my later high school years, however, that I was able to fully realize my love of the field.

Many of the most vivid memories I have of my four years at Jefferson City High School were made behind the camera. I spent three years photographing anything and everything for our student newspaper, Red and Black. In this setting, I experienced the world of photo journalism and sports photography, but at that same time I previewed the world of portrait photography through a part-time job at Childress Portrait Design. It was the time spent with the customer’s of Childress that I decided my future was in portrait photography.

Life, however, had other things in mind for me at that time. While I did begin to photograph friends and family for a very small profit, I was offered a full-time position as a commercial photographer for Arkansas Valley Feathers/Zucker Feather Products in the summer of 2006. This position gave me the opportunity to hone my studio skills, work with and overcome difficult subjects and complicated lighting situations and it also allowed me to preview the often high-paced world of commercial and fashion photography. (My commercial work for AVF/ZFP can be viewed at www.featherplace.com)

While I still continue to work with AVF/ZFP, my focus has now returned to my first love, portrait and wedding photography. I have been fortunate enough to have the chance to experience weddings alongside Steve Williams, who is a respected wedding photographer in the Kansas City area. I have also been able to spread my wings on my own at a handful of weddings. I consider it a great privilege to photograph each wedding and I love having the opportunity to share such an important day with each couple.

This year, I hope to continue growing my client base and to simply have fun with each session and explore the possibilities I have with each client and each image.

Thank you for visiting! Check back in soon… there is always more to come!
