LATE Feature Image: Model Erynn
Whew… today ran away from me and I am VERY late getting Miss Erynn’s feature image up. First, it took me nearly a half an hour to choose this as the ONE image to feature first from her awesome location session. It was a tough choice and I cannot wait to share more through the next months.
I love the back alleys of downtown Decatur, and the location is so convenient and there is a ton of variety. Plus, for those of my girls who want a little professional primping done before the session at my favorite local salon, La Petite, starting the session right downtown is so great (as it will be for Hunter tomorrow!).
Can’t wait to post more. These girls are doing so awesome!
Fantastic Fall Session with Rachael & Nick!
A couple weeks ago, I photographed Rachael & Nick. This was an awesome session. Though we were out at about 9 AM on a brisk November morning, they both were troopers and hung in there with me through the whole session. We explored a new location and I quickly fell in love with the looks we were creating. The lighting was beautiful, and these two were a blast to photograph.
Editing this session was a nightmare! There were just too many I loved. I met with Judi, their mother, today for the session premier and she quickly fell in love with the images too. Hearing “these are probably the best images taken of my kids… ever” is just what every photographer wants to hear!
We are busy planning a couple of statement wall pieces for their home and after Christmas the family will be working with me to fit the perfect custom framed pieces into their home. (With complementary installation of course). I am so excited to now be a part of this families home, and I hope very much to be able to watch them grow in the coming years.
Here are just a few of my favorite images from the session (it was so hard to even narrow it down to my 20 favorites, so this is just a SMALL selection of our favorites)!

Rachel – 2011 Jefferson City High School Senior
I absolutely LOVE working with the Miller’s. I have known this family for about 8 years now and have been photographing them for about 4! Rachel’s sister and I played volleyball together in high school and I photographed her first, then the whole family, her brother Will when he was a senior and now Rachel’s senior portraits!
Rachel’s session was so fun. We had the session at the family’s home in Jefferson City and were able to create some unique images for her. We even got a few of the family dog and her boyfriend, Jake, joined us for some too. Jake and I had his own senior session last weekend so you can look for those coming up in the next few weeks!
Here are a few favorites from Rachel’s session!

Recent Photo Shoot – Megan Snow
This is one image from a recent photoshoot with the beautiful Megan Snow (whom you may recognize as Ms. December from last year’s “Undergrads” swimsuit calendar). This is one image I took some time to play with. Though I have way to much work to do, I needed some photographic time to myself, and it manifested itself in the following image:

Wedding & Location – Senior Session with Q-Flash
The latest assignment for my wedding and location class utilzes images from one of my most recent Jefferson City Seniora Sessions with Jared Hotsenpiller. I use the Quantum Q-Flash for most of my senior and other location sessions to get a little more “edge” to the images opposed to simply using existing light. For Jared’s session we were able to use much of the Hotsenpiller’s beautiful home to create some very unique and personal backdrops, as well as a few industrial warehouses and of course the beautiful Jefferson City train station. Here are a few of my favorite images from the session (ALL using the Quantum Q-Flash).

Individual Shoot (Wed&Loc Class) – Danielle
The following are a few of my favorite images from my first Wedding and Location assignment. Danielle did a great job modeling for me over the weekend as I got back to basics, leaving behind ALL my flash and continuous lighting equipment and replacing them with a simple reflector. It was nice to get back to finding, moving and manipulating the beautiful natural life available on campus, and around Warrensburg.

2009 Columbia Hickman High School Senior – Derek Hartley
Here are a few images from my most recent senior session with Derek Hartley, a Columbia Hickman senior. Derek, his mom and I spent five hours roaming Columbia for his Senior Expedition Session, which featured five locations including the Hartley’s own home, downtown Columbia allies, Hickman High School, and Stephen’s Park. We got a little wet at the end of the session when Derek fearlessly accepted my offer to do some very unique images in the lake.

SJP 2008 Advertising – Full Page Cover Red & Black
To support my alma mater and the current Jefferson City high school newspaper staff along with getting the word out about my business to JC seniors I took over the back cover of the 24-page newspaper with this Ad:

The Red & Black staff is doing a great job this year (as they do every year) and this year’s innovative staff took the initiative to retire my design, turning the paper into a modern news magazine. The paper looks better than ever and the articles are as journalistically sound as they ever have been due in great part to the continued commitment of adviser Bill Currie. I hope all of you from the Jefferson City area have the chance to pick up a Red & Blacknow and then, these students continually do a complete and accurate job reporting the news, and they have no fear when it comes to covering the important issues.
Maureen’s Model Session – Jefferson City
These are some of my favorite images from a recent session I had with Maureen, who is looking to enter the world of modeling. We spent about 5 hours around downtown Jefferson City and we found some great places to shoot. In fact, we found so many amazing places to shoot downtown that we didn’t even go any where else!! We ended the shoot with over 1000 images and it was almost impossible for me to pick just a few to post here so these are the few I have completed and you will probably see more from Maureen’s shoot very soon!!!

Who says you need a studio to do high key??? This image was taken in front of a dirty white garage door!!

This is my new favorite location in Jefferson City!!!

A little something simple and traditional to supplement the EDGY stuff we did!
This was the second of the two July SJP session give aways.
First of two SJP Model Sessions – Kylynn Hill
The following are some of my favorite images from a fantastic model session I had this Friday with Kylynn Hill in Columbia, Missouri. The shoot was for me to test out the Columbia area and try some new shooting locations and I ended up with 700 of some of my favorite images. Kylynn trusted me enough to get a little wet toward the end of her shoot when I asked her to pose in the lake at Stephen’s Park.

There will be more images from this shoot and my second model shoot with Maureen Miller and upcoming Hickman High School 2009 senior Derek Hartley coming soon!!!

Senior Portraits – Jefferson City Missouri – Advanced Color Portrait Senior Assignment
My most recent advanced color portrait assignment was one of the most fun. Senior portraits are my true passion and my first love in photography. I had a blast hanging out with Danielle (and my new assistant Allysa). We spend the afternoon checking out new shooting locations in the Jefferson City area, starting with the basics of the governor’s garden, railroad station, and then heading down to the industrial park to get some edgier portraits (my favorite).
Here are a few of my favorite images from the session (it was hard to pick just a few favorites). Click here to view more images from this session!

These products will appear in the Designer Series and each will come frames and ready for hanging. Let me know what you think!

5×30 Deluxe Art Strip

Advanced Color Portrait – Male Portraits
In my advanced color portrait class it became apparent that many of us were falling into the trap of only photographing young beautiful women, so it was no surprise when we were given the assignment to shoot a male portrait to challenge ourselves. My answer to this challenge came in a fun high-energy photo shoot with Greg. Greg brings his high-energy personality to every situation and this was no exception, so I took advantage of my willing model to try some off the wall ideas including: in-air action shots, James Bond “hand gun” moves, and strong-man bike tosses.
I’m extremely happy with the variety of images I got from this shoot and look forward to continuing to challenge myself to think outside the border of traditional photography.

Couple Portraits by Sarah Jane Photography

My most recent assignment for Advanced Color Portrait class was to photograph a couple…these are my favorite images from my shoot with Carlie and Tyler. I had a blast hanging out with them in the studio. They were fun and laid back and we experimented with some new ideas. One of these new ideas was using a architecture lens to create multiple planes in a single image allowing selective focus (shown in the black and white image focused on their hands).

Imaging USA
This January I had the opportunity to visit the largest Professional Photographers of America (PPA) conference in Tampa, Florida… Imaging USA. While the trip was partly about the opportunity to travel to beautiful Tampa with fellow photography students, obviously the trip’s most important value was in the opportunity it gave me to be immersed in a world completely focused on my passion with over 8,000 other passionate photographers.
At the conference, I had the opportunity to visit with hundreds of photographers, attend dozens of sessions, and spend a week where nothing mattered but photography. At Imaging, photographers from around the country share their latest trends, sales secrets and general interests. I was introduced to the work of JB and DeEtte Sallee, Yervant, Howard Schatz, Kevin Kubota and many more amazing image-makers from around the world. I also had the chance to have my work reviewed and critiqued by a handful of these professionals, and all I will say is that the general opinion was quite positive.
The whole experience confirmed the fact that photography is my passion and a successful, customer focused studio is definitely in my future. Photography is my dream and Imaging USA was my dreamland, my Disney World.
Keep your eyes open for links to photographers I met in Tampa. They shared with me, and I plan to share with you.

Krista & Courtney – Beauty Light Assignment
When my model had to cancel at the last minute, these two beautiful ladies stepped in to save the day. And the result was a collection of beautiful images. We had a great time working with a beautiful lighting setup that is more in line with my style than the previous “grid spot” assignment. And this last-minute model switch led to some of my favorite images.
