| Lulcrisha | 2012 Cerro Gordo Senior |

Lulcrisha and her mom were so much fun to hang out with during the session. We were laughing and joking and Lulcrisha made my job easy she was so photogenic. She even brought some awesome fun props like her bright pink umbrella which we used for what ended up being one of my favorite images!

Here are some of our favorites from Lulcrisha’s senior session…

senior portraits, decatur il, sarah jane photography, across the miles, dr roberts, chad mitchell, classic senior portraits, new edgy original unique senior portraits

Now normally the more classic/traditional images I take are not normally grouped within my favorites, but I loved this images of Lulcrisha. :)

Sandy Puc’ Creative Kids Tour | St. Louis, MO

| Creative Kids Tour | Emotion of Images … Some Stories |

I spent a few days this last week/weekend in St. Louis doing some work at Kay Web Photography with friend and fellow photography Katie Weber and attended Sandy Puc’s Creative Kids Photography Tour last night. I have gone to one of Sandy’s major tours every year for the last five (so every year she has been touring!) and I always take home new ideas and get inspired. Photographers, I would highly encourage you checking out her education opportunities. Sandy is a photographer who is passionate about our field and passionate about helping the industry not only survive but grow, evolve and prosper. In the last five years I have seen a huge change in Sandy’s brand, style, and so much more and she is an open book sharing her journey with other photographers.

It was great to see her again and inspiring to hear some of her latest ideas, tips and struggles. But by far the most touching moment of the evening came during one of her anecdotes. She shared a very emotional story about  missing an opportunity to photograph a friend with her daughter because as we all know, life happens and they were forced to keep postponing this session. Creating these images was a chance she never got because of a horrible accident which took the life of her friend. When talking about this, she spoke not from the parents typical point of view of wanting beautiful images of their precious children but instead she asked about their view as children. As adults, how precious are the images you have of your childhood, not just the images of you, but those of you in you mother’s arms or on your father’s lap. The images that show your parents growing along side you…

In hearing her speak, the images that came to my mind were vivid. The first was an image of myself on my grandfathers lab as a baby. This is one of the only images ever taken of the two of us and my only true memory of my grandfather who passed away not long after it was taken. I never knew the man, but I knew the stories of the love he had for all his children and grandchildren and I will always have that image. The next image that came to mind for me, was an image of myself and about 6 other journalism students taken in high school at my senior prom with my teacher, mentor and inspiration, Mr. Bill Currie. This October ‘Currie’ as we called him, will have been gone two years and this image hangs in my office and always will. I can’t imagine the loss I would feel if that image were to be taken away.

Now, this blog post is not intended to be morbid or even sad, but when Sandy spoke of images this way it touched my heart and reminded me the reason why I love what I do. Images are not about the paper they are on, or the ink used to print them. But rather they are about who we are in them and the relationships they capture. Sandy pleaded to the audience to give a friend our cameras and head out and get in images with our families (because as the ‘photographer’ we are notoriously missing from those family images) and I do the same to any and all of you reading… While I would love to see you in the studio so that we can create some beautiful family portraits for you, but in the meantime go out and have a friend take some images of you and your family and do the same for her. There is no time to waste your children grow every day and no one knows how long we all have together.

Side Note: I learned last night in talking to her after the show that she has a very similar tattoo to mine. One we both got to remind ourselves to keep on going. :) I may tell you more about this later…

| Carina | 2012 Senior |

Carina’s session was so much fun. We started in the morning, trying to avoid some heat, at a wildflower field located not far from the studio. Many of my existing clients may know this field from the golden panoramic canvas I have hanging in the studio of Heather & Travis, but it looks very different this time of year with lush greens and purples some very tall ‘cat tail’ type weeds.

Carina was fearless and hopped right in the weeds so we could create some beautiful portraits. And all the ‘senior portrait gods’ came together that morning and we kept joking how she could not have been having a more perfect hair day and the wind always seemed to be blowing it in just the right direction for the images. It was a great session and with a variety of images at the wildflower field and around some of the more urban grunge areas close to downtown Decatur we got a wide variety of images for her, even including a couple with mom (those are always a blast).

So here are some of our picks from her session… senior portraits, seniors outdoor, senior on location, wildflowers, sarah jane photography, decatur il portraits

| Keith | Warrensburg-Latham Senior 2012 | Sarah Jane Photography

I’m still working on catching up on my blog posts so I have to admit that this session is from earlier this summer. Keith was a lot of fun to photograph and I was excited to be able to really feature who he is as a high school senior… an athlete! I joked throughout the session about if there was a sport he didn’t play as we worked to feature everything. In the choices below, you will see that soccer was a staple in some of my favorite images but don’t be fooled, we worked in basketball and track in his images as well!

Check out a few of our favorite images from his session…

| Glenn Family | In-Home Family Portraits | SJP |

Not only do I love photographing at new locations, I am always excited to photograph at a clients home because I know we can create images that go beyond ordinary and become pieces that are truly personal to each family. The Glenn Family Session did just that. H.R. and her husband have a beautiful home with stunning garden and beating the heat with a morning session and gathered the whole family for a fun an personalized session.

It is often difficult to bring whole families together but big family events like weddings, birthdays, reunions and more offer great opportunities for family portraits. The Glenn family were all in town for Kris’s birthday so it was the perfect chance to capture these images.

Here are a few images from their session including a couple that will soon be focal pieces on the client’s walls! I love it when my work can become an important part of my client’s homes.

| Michelle | Beautiful Boudoir Portraits |

An in-home studio is perfect for my boutique boudoir sessions. By being able to use every room, window, staircase, doorway, and piece of furniture each of my clients can get a variety of intimate looks that go beyond just the look of a traditional studio. Michelle’s session was one of my favorite boudoir sessions, she is a very fun person and though she said she was a little nervous you would have never guessed it. Excitement and adventurousness definitely overshadowed any nervousness as far as I could tell.

Because Michelle was excited to try a variety of different looks we pushed the envelope a bit with her session and tried some things I hadn’t even done before … like the ‘belt’ image below that is by far one of my favorites and the future cover of her beautiful designer album! Well enough talking from me, take a look for yourself at just how awesome Michelle’s session was!

When I saw the hat that Michelle brought in I knew I wanted to take this image and when I suggested it to her she was more than excited to give it a try!

Michelle was the very first client to be photographed on my craigslist find (the vanity). She loved the reflections and so did I.

| Thrive Shoots – August |

As a photographer, I often work for compensation that comes outside the form of money. This month, I got a call from Thrive’s publisher, and friend,  Katrina Smalley asking how I felt about working for beer and coffee. My reply was something along the lines of ‘LOVE IT, tell me more!’

The result was that I got to spend a couple hours over the course of a couple days at both McGorrays Golf & Grill and Wildflower Artisan Bakery photographing (and then drinking) both beer and coffee.

Below are just a few images from these fun sessions.

**CLIENT THANK YOUS**

Wow, sorry it has been almost a MONTH since my last blog post. August has been my busiest month yet and I couldn’t be happier with the continued growth of the business here in Decatur!

In the last month I have …

  • Traveled to southern Missouri to the quant little railroad/river town of Glasgow to photograph a very unique wedding for a very fun couple. (This would be why you didn’t see me out and about photographing at the Decatur Celebration).
  • Had a day of beer/coffee/photography at McGorray’s and Wildflower Cafe photographing Ads for Thrive.
  • Hosted the first of our two Senior Portrait Evenings at Warrensburg-Latham High School  to photograph the senior’s yearbook images.
  • Launched an exciting rewards program in partnership with Hannah Shaw at La Petite Salon.
  • And, of course, photographed a number of area high school seniors, families, couples and boudoir ladies. Plus, I am so excited to have also planned a few amazing sessions for the coming months including a football themed engagement session (you won’t want to miss the feature on that one).
I am so blessed and each time I stop to think, wow that was a better month than I could have ever hoped for, the following month surpasses all expectations yet again. I want to take a second here (before I start posting some features you missed over the last month) to thank each of my amazing clients. You are the reason I am able to get up every day and do what I always dreamed of doing. I couldn’t have asked for better clients and I truly enjoy working with all of you and look forward to each time you come in. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for choosing me and SJP for your photography.
Ok… now lets get to some of the images you missed over the last month!

Summer Engagement Portraits | Sarah Jane Photography

| Amy + Aaron | Engaged

I met this couple when I was invited to speak at one of the Decatur Camera Club’s monthly meetings.  Just a few months after hearing me speak they called to book their wedding. There consultation was a breeze and it was great to have a couple in who had gotten a glimpse behind the scenes of what I do already through attending my portrait lighting and posing talk.

As a photographer, anytime you photograph a photographer its gives you just the little extra challenge to stay on top of your game. And, on the other hand, when you would with creative people like Amy and Aaron it is like having three heads come up with great ideas for the session. The picnic scene is one of my favorites, Amy brought all the needed accessories and with a great location with the beautiful lake in the background I think it worked out so well.

I cannot wait to photograph Amy & Aaron’s wedding day. I know we will be coming up with some amazing concepts.

Boutique Senior Photography | Albums Wall Art & More | Decatur, IL

Sarah Jane Photography | More than just 8x10s!

The old senior ‘packages’ of 8x10s, folios, proof books and pose limits are things of the past. Contemporary senior portrait artists and boutique studios (like SJP) are now offering clients much more stylish options to show off many more of their images in a dramatic way… ALBUMS.

Books are not just for weddings anymore, I offer designer books and albums for families, babies, seniors, boudoir ladies and of course weddings. Plus, my favorite product: guestbooks. There is no better way to wow your guests on your wedding day than by having them sign their best wishes to you in a book filled with images from your engagement session!

But I probably have the most fun designing books for my senior clients… with seniors its about style and a little bit of edge and I try to pour that into every page of the album. Check out one of my most recent albums for the lovely Miss Hunter!

First Birthday Portraits – FREEBIES + Session Deals

It has been my experience that in running a small business many great ideas and marketing pieces develop out of imediate need. I have been collecting my client’s birthdays and the birthdays of their children since nearly the beginning of my business all with the idea to someday launch a birthday promotion to give each client a special gift on their birthday each year. Well, just last week a wonderful client of mine called me because her daughter Khloe (which some of you may remember seeing as I have photographed her before) is turning ONE in August!

She would like for me to take images that she can display at Khloe’s birthday party and was curious if I had a birthday promotion. I was completely honest with her and I think my reply was something like “Well, I want to… but just have not quite gotten there yet!” So I told her to give me the weekend to coral all my ideas (kept in my nice little jam packet marketing notebook) into a finished Birthday promotion which I would unveil Monday…. So… Its MONDAY! And as promised, I am done!

So below is my First Birthday Promotion Card that will go out to all my clients with little ones who will turn one soon.

I’m equally excited about the birthday promotion that will extend to all those celebrating their 2nd-18th birthdays. I love the look of the First Birthday Monogram Display and it seemed just the item begin a series. So if it is your birthday, and your not turning one, I am happy to offer you 30% off the session of your choice (featuring only the birthday girl/boy) PLUS a 4×10 “It’s My Birthday” Portrait. Each year this art piece will feature the child’s age creating a beautiful wall series that shows your child grow up through the years! And you can customize this portrait art display by adding a 4×10 Designer Name Print to begin the series, or adding a beautiful designer portrait ledge in the color of your choice and even upgrade to 5×15 size to really make an impact!

Outdoor Engagement Portraits – Rock Springs Nature Center

Maggi + Jay Engaged

We could not have asked for better weather for Maggi & Jay’s engagement session. Beautiful evening light and a little breeze and great temperature made it a perfect evening at Rock Springs Nature Center in Decatur.

This was my first session at Rock Springs (I just had my second yesterday morning!) and I have to say I am a fan. The pine forest is has gorgeous light anytime of day as the light filters down through the towering forest and the wild fields are a winner for sure.

Plus, I couldn’t have asked for a better couple. These to fit together so well and I am so excited to be a part of this chapter of their lives. It is exciting to watch all the changes that come in a couple’s lives around their wedding and these two came in for their premier just days after purchasing their new home. I couldn’t be happier for the two of them and can’t wait to photograph their wedding day in October. Here are a few of our favorites from the session.

Maggi … “My fiancé and I researched several photographers before meeting with Sarah. The moment we left our first appointment with her, we knew she was the one for us. She was energetic and passionate, organized, and very informative about what to expect from her.”

“We recently had our engagement session with Sarah. The session was very laid back and she made it very easy to get comfortable. She was creative with the angles as well as the natural light and colors from the outdoor setting. I could not be happier! I am really looking forward to our wedding day and seeing all of the pictures we will have to cherish for a lifetime. I have already recommended Sarah to several of my friends, and would stand behind that recommendation any day! She is awesome!”

Jenn + Scott Married

Well if you have been anywhere near my blog in the past month you know that my BFF got married 2 weeks ago! I had the honor of being her Maid of Honor so I was not the official photographer of the day but I, of course, had my camera with me all day and here are some of the images from her big day.

Surviving living with me for 4 years earns her some quick previews on FB and the blog :)

Boutique Studio Engagement Portraits – Sarah Jane

Bernadette + Kenny Engaged

Bernadette stopped by my booth at the Neuhoff Media Lady Palooza event a few months ago and right away I knew she was a client I wanted to work with! She was so fun and energetic and was so excited to look at all my different products, especially our designer albums.

This is a session that kind of morphed as we went along. We started with just Bernadette to get a few bridal images of her before their big day. But with a quick phone call Bernadette was able to talk Kenny into stopping by the studio as well and we hopped right into photographing some engagement images of the two of them.

After a few portraits of the couple, I went to change the backdrop and Bernadette caught a peak at Heather & Travis’s Panoramic Wall Canvas that was hidden behind the background and she was instantly in love! (I love it when that happens!!!) Though her session didn’t include a second location, the wildflower field is just minutes away and I could see she really wanted to go so, of course, we went.

Oh and did I mention, we let Kenny head home about 10 minutes before she saw that portrait thinking we would finish up the session with just Bernadette… Well Kenny was a trooper and happily came back so we could create a wall portrait in the field and it turned out beautifully.

One Year Old Brandon – First SJP Portraits!

The little man is going to be a heart breaker someday! Just 10 minutes into the session he had me in the palm of his little hand. Brandon, mom (Carol) and dad (Sam) and I had blast during the session and were all laughs by the time the hour was finished. As usual with an energetic little boy like Brandon, mom and dad were quite surprised to see that we slowed him down enough to capture the images we did.

Here are some of my favorite images from Brandon’s session! Can’t wait to have this family Wall Art ready for them to show off.

Springfield, IL – Engagement Session: Sarah Jane Photography

John + Kelly Engaged

I photographed John & Kelly in Springfield and we couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day. I was excited to explore downtown Springfield with these two and with John’s eye for architecture we ended up with some amazing backdrops.

We started their session at Washington Park, spending some time around the lake then exploring some of the freshly budded trees and tulips. We were even able to stop at one of the older concrete bridges on the way out of the park to photograph some unique images especially for John.

With a quick clothing change (these guys looked great, perfectly coordinated together!), we headed downtown!

I can’t wait to see how their wall series looks up in their home (images coming as soon as they pass them along).

Jenn + Scott = Engaged / Decatur, IL Photographer

Meet my best friend in the whole world, the beautiful Miss Jennifer Greer and her fiance Scott Murray. You may remember the single image I posted of these two a while back… but as we gear up for her wedding in less than 2 weeks, I thought it was time to post a few more.

Joyce – Come Together

A few weeks ago I had the chance to do a very quick photo session with Joyce for Thrive Entertainment Guide. Joyce came by the studio decked out in one of her own T-shirt creations showing off the Come Together logo. We had about a five minute quick head shot session and spent the following 30 minutes having a great conversation and getting to know each other.

In that short amount of time I can tell you that I learned for certain that Joyce is an amazing woman and one I hope to get to know and work with much more in the future.

Pick up the June issue of Thrive to see more plus check out this article to learn more about Joyce and this organization/event: http://www.herald-review.com/news/local/article_5c8716a9-afb4-51c6-9a95-8b2a3a617b2d.html

Here is one of my favorite images from our session!

Joplin Tornado – Help the Red Cross!

All of you surely know about the devastation caused by a huge tornado that tore through the southern Missouri town of Joplin last weekend. With my best friend, Jenn, her fiance and most of her family living in Joplin this disaster hit far to close to home for me.

I, not being one to watch the weather or any news much, started getting text messages and phone calls from friends and family members who were concerned about Jenn and if I had heard about her. I, of course, had no idea what was going on until these messages started coming in and then, needless to say, I got a little panicked. I didn’t hesitate picking up my phone to get in touch with Jenn and make sure all the ones I loved were safe. My comical reply was “Yup, safe on Scotts couch.”

As I have heard from a few in the area, Joplin, being in tornado ally, is used to its fair share of severe weather so not much was thought differently about these forecasts and warnings. Jenn was proceeding with her normal evening chilling on the couch, presumably working on wedding details as she gets married in less than two weeks. It wasn’t long, though that our texting back and forth was stopped short with a “Sarah, this is soooooo scary…”

With that text, my eyes teared up, my heart sank and I prayed harder than I have ever prayed in my life. I could feel the fear and reality in that text. I was able to keep texting Jenn as the storm passed without harming their home. And though 6 hours from the devastation, Jennifer has taken me through every step with her sending me images as they worked to check on all the family members and assess the damage. Images sent to me of severe flooding at her parents home, the roof ripped off her grandmother’s home and of course more images like those shown on every news station, of complete and utter devastation.

I, myself, have been but inches from tears throughout most of the days following the tornado. This hit far too close to home and imagining the loss of if my texts had not been answered brings tears to my eyes again as I type. My heart and soul reaches out to those who have lost loved ones in this tragedy. Property can be rebuilt but lives cannot be replaced.

In the wake of the tornado the American Red Cross issued a Red Alert for O Negative blood, meaning they had less than a day supply of this universal blood type. Many of you might have seen on facebook my listing of donation facilities to visit for those in Joplin, however I want to encourage all of us to do more. This is a disaster on our own soil… in our own backyards… effecting out neighbors and for many of us our family and loved ones.

I know we all have busy lives, but you can donate $10 to the American Red Cross simply by texting ‘redcross’ to 90999. It is such an easy and simple way to help your neighbors and an organization that does so much to help in the wake of any tragedy. Not that I think you should need further motivation or reward for this donation, but once you have donated I invite you to visit my facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Decatur-IL/Sarah-Jane-Photography/181887343520 and post on my recent status update that you have donated. This will hopefully encourage more to do the same and I will be giving one lucky winner a $50 Portrait Gift!

I just learned of this MU T-Shirt sale to help Joplin also… http://mutigers.cbscollegestore.com/store_contents.cfm?store_id=51&partner_id=13968&dept_id=410&product_id=193994

Purchase a T-shirt or donate to Red Cross through the cell text and you qualify for the SJJP giveaway!

Please, don’t wait. Help now, when your neighbors need it most.

Pageant Photography – Decatur IL

The Adorable Miss Haylei

I am always looking for fun new ways to meet new clients so when Candy approached me about sponsoring her beautiful daughter Haylei I was excited for the new experience! Having not been a pageant girl myself I was intrigued and interested to learn all I could! Candy, Haylei and I met before the session so they could introduce me to the world of pageants and show me Haylei’s current portfolio.

A few weeks later, we had Haylei’s session. It was a beautiful day and we took advantage of the nice weather by starting the session downtown, then taking a quick trip to the wildflower field and then ending up back at the studio!

I may not know much about pageants, but this little cutie has my vote! She was so fun to photograph and get to know and her personality is just so so sweet! She was so much fun to work with and I can’t wait until she gets to show off these new images at her next pageant!

Last, but not least, I want to send out a big thanks to Hannah Shaw of La Petite Salon who donated her hair and makeup services to Haylei as well.

Here are some of my favorite images of Haylei (It was so hard to choose!!)

Peek behind the lens … Sarah Jane Photography – field trip!

So if you follow the SJP posts and facebook updates and EVERYTHING then you have probably figured out that I work ALL the time! After a morning cup of coffee and a bucket of makeup to get me ‘up to code’ as I like to say I hit work by at least 9 am every day and I am usually running 100 MPH until about 12:00-1:00 before crashing and starting again the next day… same story 6-7 days a week!

Well, fellow workaholic, Hannah Shaw and I are quite the pair and while we can keep up that pace for a bit, we usually need to run away and escape for a bit at least a few hours a week… so the two of us have carved out some time in our weeks to ignore work (more like hide from it!). A few weeks ago (yes this is a VERY delayed blog post!) we headed out to Clinton to have lunch at La Tea Da Tea Room (YES we LOVE the name!). Before even entering we were ‘ooo’ing and ‘ahhh’ing over the cute house, bistro chairs/tables outside, and the plants etc! The place is adorable and then you walk inside and the decor, women, and food are all just as adorable.

It is cosy and sweet and the food is absolutely delicious! The staff is a wonderful group of ladies who were so sweet and I would say it is a great place to take the afternoon to get away for a bit. Then after lunch (and DESERT … do not.. I REPEAT DO NOT skip desert here!) we headed up to the gift shop which was full of about 1000 things we fell in love with and wanted to take home (of course our garage sale budgets would not allow us to pay retail so we left empty handed). :(

Anyways, if you get the change to get away for a bit head to La Tea Da! You won’t regret it.

BTW I must note that Hannah is a MUST better blogger than me. We went to pick up an antique vanity from a garage sale yesterday and this thing is already featured on her blog! She is also a much better garage saler and craigslister because I want that vanity! :)

Today, I also decided to add a bonus feature image of my cousin’s baby girl, Ava! We decided to do a little mini session this last weekend when I was home to visit family and this is one of my favorite images. Once we got her sleeping we were able to get some great images. Had to use a few tricks including the vacuum cleaner!!!!

LATE Feature Image: Model Erynn

Whew… today ran away from me and I am VERY late getting Miss Erynn’s feature image up. First, it took me nearly a half an hour to choose this as the ONE image to feature first from her awesome location session. It was a tough choice and I cannot wait to share more through the next months.

I love the back alleys of downtown Decatur, and the location is so convenient and there is a ton of variety. Plus, for those of my girls who want a little professional primping done before the session at my favorite local salon, La Petite, starting the session right downtown is so great (as it will be for Hunter tomorrow!).

Can’t wait to post more. These girls are doing so awesome!
