Jen & Mike had a BEAUTIFUL wedding day, getting married at St. John’s Lutheran Church here in Decatur with their wedding reception at the gorgeous Decatur Country Club. We could not have asked for more perfect weather and as you can see they are an absolutely adorable couple.

Decatur Illinois Wedding, Decatur Country Club Reception, Sarah Jane Photography, Decatur IL Photographer, Wedding Photographer, Wedding Portraits, Sarah JaneFor this wedding the SJP team was a little rounder than usual as their wedding date was only TEN days before my due date (9 days before #babyB made her arrival). And I wasn’t the only one with extra hands on deck as my second shooter, Elizabeth, was also around 7 months pregnant at the time too!

Well even if I did waddle a bit I was thrilled to be able to capture this couple’s special day! Here are some of our favorites….

| Decatur IL Small Business | The Secret Garden Florist |

It’s SMALL BUSINESS FEATURE time! This month, I’m so excited to bring you one of Decatur’s finest florists, The Secret Garden. Lori & Michael are so much fun and are really big supporters of growth and development in our area (which y’all know I love). That’s actually how I reconnected with these two in time to bring you their feature this month; we ran into each other at Millikin’s Micro Business Roundtable event last month and with the cold weather out I figured they would be the perfect business to feature in March so we can get a little reminder of the spring beauty that is just around the corner! Well, enough from me, let’s hear from Lori!

Can I just stop to say I LOVE the first sentence of Lori’s reply ‘We make people smile!” She goes on to tell you how they do that, but their focus is truly to make you smile and what better business model is there?!?

We are also a full service wedding and event florist. Offering full wedding set up, tear down, rental, and on trend designs. For brides on a budget we offer package deals that cover all of their floral needs but help with keeping the costs low. For the DIY bride we offer bulk flowers. We order, inspect, and process the flowers for the Bride. Then they pick up the flowers and create their own wedding flowers.

We have 3 Illinois Certified Florists and 1 certified balloonist on Staff at The Secret Garden. This is a certification offered by the Illinois State Florist Association. After completing a series of courses and tests in design, care and handling, wedding and event work, funeral arrangements, and basic business skills the certificate is awarded. Our balloonist attended classes at Burton and Burton in Georgia. She studied techniques, trends, and tips to create balloon arches, sculptures, and more. Her ribbon can be seen on stage at Come Together Lets Walk in June.

Flowers of course! If everyone had flowers on their table in the morning or on their desk at work the world would be a happier place. You would not believe the power of a flower. It can comfort the grieving, give hope to the sick, fill a bride with joy, celebrate a moment in time, and make even the gloomiest of days bright.

Bring their friends! We are always honored when folks come in and show off our store. They walk around like a tour guide and tell their friends how much they love our stuff. It’s humbling knowing that people love what we do as much as we do.

Amen sister!  It really is an amazing feeling to have someone love your work as much as you do and love it enough to share it with friends and family.

Why? Our coolers! Our coolers are essential in keeping our flowers fresh and long lasting. When one goes down it always makes for a long day. Without our coolers we could not do what we do.

What other local business do you just LOVE? Why? Oh wow, this is a tough one. We work with so many it would be impossible to decide. We have partnered with local bakers, photographers, dress shops, and so much more. We believe that supporting small business is the best way to give back to the community. (You all know I agree 100% with that!)

Michael and I stumbled into this opportunity and fell in love with flowers. We enjoy working together and seeing our vision take shape.

When did you know you wanted to go into this business? We both worked for corporations in the past. In the evenings we would discuss our day and see the mistakes that big companies make. Not valuing their employees, poor planning, unrealistic goals. We always felt that if we went out on our own we could do things differently and become successful.

Describe your PERFECT day… When you are surrounded by flowers it’s hard not to have good days just about every day. I think we will see a PERFECT day when we retire. We will be able to look back on our business, see the impact on other people’s lives, and know that we did what we set out to do… make people smile!

| Decatur IL Family Photographer | Christmas Photos |

This year (well ok, last year) I did something brand new for Sarah Jane Photography! I hosted a one-day mini session event for Christmas portraits at the studio. Since it was the first event we had just a few available spaces and I’m so excited about the beautiful families and little ones we hosted.

Take a look at these adorable families and the gorgeous makeover my fireplace received from the ever-talented Elizabeth from Punch & Sizzle.

| Mother’s Day Gift Ideas | Central Illinois Portrait Photographer |

| MOTHER’S DAY GIFTS |

It’s the time of year when we finally get to focus on Mom, for one day. If your mother is anything like mine, the woman deserves at least 360 days of celebration a year (she might even deserve the whole year!). But this day, this one day, is just for her. To celebrate what she is sure to tell you is the best job in the world, being your mother. And what do you get Mom on this special day? Aside from time with you, I hear time and time again from the mother’s who walk through my doors how much the love and adore the portraits of their children. Whether you are 1 or 51 (or older), your mother would love a portrait of you more than dinner, a dress, even a diamond.

I’ve given my mom many things over the years for mother’s day. From handmade floral arguments when my little kid pockets were pretty empty to self portraits of myself and her grand puppies when my college pockets were pretty empty! It was always these personal gifts that held the places of honor in our home or on her desk for the longest time. And if you look at her desk now you will see a literal shrine of Sarah through the years. (Yes, I get to relive the glasses, braces and all the hair do mistakes EVERY time I go to visit). While there may be stages of our lives we would rather forget (like a bad-idea blond year in high school, I just do NOT have the complexion for blond), these are all the times of our lives our mother’s want to remember.

So this year, gift mom with a one-of-a-kind portrait experience. Yes, not just a portrait but the entire experience. Let her work with us to design a session that capture’s her families personality and love. Then spend the time with the whole family in the beautiful spring weather creating these beautiful images and then sit back with a cup of coffee to view her family on the big screen during her image premier. Finally, let us send her home with a designer art piece for her wall where she can walk by her family every day. Or let us pamper her with custom image jewelry, because you know she wants to show these off to all her friends! Make your mom the envy of all the girls with an SJP mother’s day session, gift card or product.

Just call, we will help you pick out the perfect item to make your mom remember she is appreciated the full 365 days a year! Afterall how can you not walk by an image like this without smiling every time.

Boutique Senior Photography | Albums Wall Art & More | Decatur, IL

Sarah Jane Photography | More than just 8x10s!

The old senior ‘packages’ of 8x10s, folios, proof books and pose limits are things of the past. Contemporary senior portrait artists and boutique studios (like SJP) are now offering clients much more stylish options to show off many more of their images in a dramatic way… ALBUMS.

Books are not just for weddings anymore, I offer designer books and albums for families, babies, seniors, boudoir ladies and of course weddings. Plus, my favorite product: guestbooks. There is no better way to wow your guests on your wedding day than by having them sign their best wishes to you in a book filled with images from your engagement session!

But I probably have the most fun designing books for my senior clients… with seniors its about style and a little bit of edge and I try to pour that into every page of the album. Check out one of my most recent albums for the lovely Miss Hunter!

Commercial Photography – Decatur Illinois

Dusting off my commercial boots this week. Tomorrow I am meeting with a local business in Decatur to discuss some of her photography needs, so today I was digging through some of the images I did for Arkansas Valley Feathers/Zucker Feather Company and ran across this one when inspiration hit! Isn’t it funny how an image can be “ordinary” when shot but later when you look again you see something you never noticed before.

I’ll be updating the “commercial” section of sjanephotogaphy.com this week also!

Sarah Jane – Now a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant

I am proud to announce that last month I became an Independent Beauty Consultant for Mary Kay Cosmetics! I know this doesn’t have much to do with photography, and this is my Photography/business blog, but part of the goal behind the blog is to give my SJP family of clients a little glimpse into who I am – the girl behind the camera, so-to-speak.

Well as of last month, who I am now includes an avid Mary Kay cosmetics fan AND a new consultant. Though I say this has “little” to do with photography, the truth is that for me the two are related. My skill and knowledge in each compliments the other. For one, I am so happy to be able to include “mini beauty shoots” in each of my Mary Kay parties so that each lady gets a professional image of her new amazing Mary Kay look. This works great right now as Mary Kay recently announced a Make Over contest with an impressive $4000 DREAM VACATION grand prize!!! (call/text/email to find out how you can win)

There is so much that I absolutely love about Mary Kay products that I could go on and on (and only a couple months ago I would have told you Mary Kay was makeup for your grandma)… I have fallen in love with superior products that in only a couple weeks transformed my skin. I have never had the perfect complexion and always struggled to reduce the appearance of my pores, control excess oil and prevent both over dry patches and breakouts – AHHH. Mine was not a simple skin solution – or so I thought. I do admit that my medicine cabinet went from a collection of about 5-10 products ranging from Clean & Clear to Oil of Olay and everything in between, to MARY KAY MARY KAY MARY KAY (and my tooth brush)! I use everything from the classic Timewise Miracle Set to the oil matifier, oil free eye makeup remover, acne cream, microdermabrasion set and the full color line! AND THEY WORK – Yes, I was as surprised as I sound here.

I never thought there was a difference as nothing had ever really worked for me before. I have also started giving the product as gifts to my closest girlfriends/family as I know that these products need to be in all my girls’ cabinets. The best text I got this week, was one of my best friends texting me to tell me I had her hooked on the moisturizer I had given her for her birthday. She couldn’t believe how great it worked and my response was “I know!!! I told you. It only gets better from there!” Needless to say, she has her own party booked next week so she can earn some FREE product.

Though the blog will still feature my photography and images of my amazing SJP clients, look for a few Mary Kay updates mixed in as well. I will also be toying around with some product reviews and makeup application tips (videos perhaps). I would love your feedback on what you would like to see, and if you use Mary Kay I would love to know what your favorite products are!

🙂 Sarah

Model Headshots – SJP

I had a great shoot today with an old roommate of mine, Elissa. She is about to graduate from the University of Central Missouri and embark out into the world of acting. Today we had a great shoot in the studio to give her some new headshots. This is my third shoot with Elissa and I have to say that she is a blast to work with and it is so great to photograph actors/actresses because of their range and their ability to show their feelings in their faces.

Below is my favorite art shot from the session today.

Project 365 – My Past :)

Since I didn’t start sharing these on the blog until yesterday 2/4 … I obviously have over a month’s worth of images unposted so I will try to filter them in as I can along with the new day posts:

Here is the old:

Project 365 : January 1, 2010

Caption: Most of the images in the beginning of January are “make up images” since I didn’t begin the project until the middle of the month. This image is a pink post-it note behind a hole in a plastic basket.

Project 365 – 2010 project – Missouri Photographer

So… January is always full of resolutions and JUNK but for me it is really a time for “personal goal.” Yes, I know that for some these may seem like the same thing, but lets just face it… resolutions just don’t work. Just ask the 15 pound I have resolved to lose each year for the past 5 years… they are STILL here!

For me 2010 is going to be a time of huge changes (just like every year I guess). I will be moving to ???????? (no idea yet) in just 3 short months to begin the next chapter of my life (entitled “Life after college.. the grown up years”) and I will be running full force toward my dream of owning the biggest, baddest photographic studio EVER! 🙂 Dream big!

SO… the point? I have set myself up with my own little personal project, and I am taking you people along for the ride (the 2 of you who probably stumble upon my blog in your web wanderings) 🙂

My project is to take an image EVERY day!! With my nifty new iPhone I have downloaded an app called “Project 365” and the goal is to create an image every day of the year. Though it is difficult to remember each day, I have done my best to take an image every day and at least make up for the days I miss. It has only been a month but it has been so much fun simply because the images are just creative, fun and I have started to look at my world again.

So today I decided I should put the images out there (where ever there may be). So I will do that here… plus, honestly, it is a little therapeutic for me to spend a few seconds every day looking for an image, and laughing at what I find/see and to write it all down…

Engagement Session – Guestbook

One of the greatest parts of being a photographer is getting to work with friends and family! My cousin, Austin, is getting married to is beautiful fiance, Janessa, next June and I am so excited to be photographing the wedding.

Austin and Janessa are a young couple and we had a blast photographing their engagement session a few months ago on the campus of the University of Missouri – Columbia. Campus is beautiful, though it was quite cold that day.

Today, I designed their custom guestbook and I am soo excited about this product! You can view the design below and I hope can see why I think this is such a unique product! I am sure anyone who had been to a wedding in the past decade if familiar with the traditional (and BORING) guestbooks… Usually a white or cream linen with some lace and plain lined pages to sign in. Now try to think of another place where you signed in in this exact same way … any guesses?

A funeral!?! … lets not associate an end with your beginning.

So try on a new idea… A beautiful, custom designed album of your engagement session. Now you get more from that session than just a newspaper announcement, you wow your guests with this hot new product, and more than that you invite them to write more than just their names. With no lines, most guests will feel invited to include a special note, or good wishes along with their names. These comment alongside your beautiful images will let you revisit your day and your love over the years.

Plus, think about it, anyone remember getting out that old dusty sign in book to look at the names? But you have to have a guestbook right? So lets do it in style!!!!

Daycare Portrait Sessions!!!

Obviously inspired by my last portrait session, I have decided to start offering more daycare portrait sessions!! YAY.

If you missed my last post you should check it out below… I spent just a couple hours at at an in-home daycare last week photographing each of the children and I had a blast!!! So it got me thinking why not do some more! The sessions are fast and fun and really very easy,  for parents that is! And, lets face it, easy is NOT the word most parents think of when thinking of getting their children ready for a portrait session.

But parents think about this, you get your child ready for daycare just like any other day except maybe you pick out a special outfit and pack an extra outfit too. That’s it! When you pick up your little one and go home, you have an image gallery full of beautiful images of your precious baby! Done!!!

And daycare providers, this is a great way to offer your parents a little extra service. You can choose to pay for the session as a gift to the parents for giving your their business, OR have them cover their session and have the gift be the convenience of you organizing the day! And don’t worry, I do most of the work 🙂 … You just coordinate with the parents to get contact information for me, session payments and to relay session details to each parent.

Plus, as a thanks for being the coordinator of the event, I will also take a group image of all your little ones and you (and any other daycare staff members) … the whole gang! And I give you a FREE 4×6 of my favorite group blooper image… and I promise there will be one! This is a great way to market your daycare if you are expanding or create memories of the children you care for over the years!

Call, email or text me to book your session today!

“Hey Baby” – Missouri Photographer

My morning was babies, babies, babies! When approached by a local in-home daycare to plan a shoot-day at the daycare my first reaction was sheer terror! Could I handle six babies under 3-years-old let alone make beautiful images of them? I quickly decided to jump in and accept the challenge. And the result….

I had a blast spending 2 hours with these high energy and beautiful babies and produced some of my favorite new images. Here are a few:

I have fallen in love with the art and style of boudoir photography even more after hearing the buzz about this hot trend from the Boudoir Divas at the Imaging USA conference last week and it is time to get started. I have some great new ideas and am excited to work with some new clients/models.

Ladies, if you are interested please email, call or text me soon (I’m sure the five slots won’t last long)! Feeling a little nervous about boudoir images? That is normal, lets face it who feels like one of the Victoria’s Secret models on a daily basis? Not me! That is why I love to make my girls feel like one for a moment, and trust me you will!

These sessions are all about you! You pick the outfits and the style that makes you feel beautiful and I coach you into flattering poses while using my artistic eye and lighting techniques to highlight your beauty. Here are some of my clothing suggestions.. pick the style that fits your personality!

Outfits/Props/Clothing:

-Pajamas

-“His” Clothes: White button down shirt, Sports Jerseys, Uniform, etc

-Panties/Bra sets

-Winter Coat (with panties/bra set)

-Hats!!! (Glam it up girls, if it would impress the girls at the Derby we are golden!)

-Pearls, costume jewelry, feathers, ribbon

-Accessories!!! Sun Glasses,

-SHOES SHOES SHOES!! High heels (I don’t know a girl who doesn’t look stunning in a great   pair of heels), boots, rain boots, winter boots, etc

And don’t worry, I have some hats and accessories to add to you selection too!

I can’t wait to get started! FORGET VICTORIA! IT IS TIME FOR  <your name here>‘s SECRET!

*What’s the catch to the FREE session?? Not really a catch, but as will all my FREE model sessions, the point is to get me creative AND to add to my portfolio so I can show potential clients what I am working on… so each model must sign a release allowing me rights to display the images (most are shown here on my blog and website, but also in advertisements, etc).

Great new things coming in 2010!!!

I am so excited about starting another new year and new and exciting adventures with the business! I already have some great new options lined up for 2010 brides two of the biggest additions being a live photo booth and my associate program! Here is a preview of both new ideas.

Photo Booth: Brides are all concerned with making sure their guests are well fed, well entertained and happy at the reception. Well the photo booth ensures that your guests will not spend a single moment sitting in their seats.

What is it: The photo booth is a mini studio set up at your reception hall where all your guests can have a great time being goofy in front of the camera and getting some fun and beautiful images of themselves, their friends and their family while everyone is together. Goofy hats and props themed to your wedding colors make the experience even more unique!

Plus: Want to really impress your guests with a personal “party favor” opt for the guest gift option and you can give each of your guests a professionally framed image of themselves as a party favor!!! It will have them talking about your event for years!!!

_____________

I am also really excited about my associate photographer program. What does this mean for 2010 brides? Now every bride, no matter the budget, can get the SJP wedding experience. Have your engagement, bridal and boudoir sessions with me (Sarah) and have your wedding day covered by one of my hand-picked professional associate photographers for only $150/hour (3 hour minimum). This is a HUGE savings and a great way to get a professional experience within a smaller budget. Budget product line is coming soon!! Call to book today, DATES/SPACES ARE LIMITED!

Alicia – New Bloomfield Senior 2010

I had an amazing session with Alicia last weekend. Favorite location, great evening (afternoon now) light and beautiful senior all combine to create some of my favorite images. Here are just a few (it took me a long time to narrow it down to just these). These are the images that will be featured on her senior model cards (that is why they are so tall and skinny)… Those interested in being senior models call, email or TEXT me. You get some unique little cards, each featuring a different image of you and each worth $10 in print credit for you and a friend when you refer a new client!!! 🙂
